    Hey Stuart. I actually met you once at Nigel Creek trailhead. I was in the party with Joey and Chuck. My wife and I just did this circuit spur of the moment a week ago. Got the idea from this video. Your Gaia track really helped us complete the route. We closed the circuit in 7 days/6 nights. Thank You for your work. Cheers.

It was a thrill for Evelyn and I to meet you all having watched so many of the videos that you all put together. Great time on that trip in the Banff front ranges. Did a similar hike to this last year except we came over northover and went back into k Country sooner. I agree that decent was wild. Places where you had to put one foot in front of the other like a tight rope. As far as the grizzly i just returned from the sawback range circuit and on the last morning leaving lullen lake a hiker left 20 min before me and when i left camp i ran into her coming back. She got bluff charged. So we regrouped and the other campers and us left at the same time and no more than 5 min from camp 2 grizzles met us on the trail coming up towards the lake. Was a pretty exciting morning. Keep the epic trips coming.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike 2 дня назад

      I heard about that situation on the saw back with the grizzlies. Safety and numbers! Yikes!!!!! Yeah that descent was pretty crazy. Like there was no trail, and barely any place to put your feet. When you add that to my issue with a fear of heights, it was an interesting morning! Thanks for the comment and watching the video, hope to see you out there at some point!

    at 2:22 you might be referencing Point Backcountry Camp. I winter camped there in 2019 and they had a picnic table/fire pit at each site which was really amazing. Two or three split wood piles were along the main trail through the campground. The following years they took all of the wood and fire pits out and "no fires" was implemented. Then...wood piles went back in and a main communal fire area was made. Then...they took that out again lol. Now I believe its back to communal. Definitely a bipolar camp.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike 2 дня назад

      Haha! Yes I think that's the campsite am my goodness me. Bipolar government of Alberta! I don't need to elaborate much further on that point. So much bureaucracy managing these parks. Everybody comes in with a different idea what they should do, they waste a lot of our money doing it, and then they reverse it. Again, that's all I'll say!

    Woohoo, my cousin and I will be walking through here next year for our section c gdt hike! But coming from northover side. I seen you use a solar panel or sis before. Do you still on long multi days or changed how ya managed batteries now?

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike 2 дня назад

      Oh my God Northover. Aaron had pitched that to me as part of this trip, and then I watched a couple of videos and absolutely said no way! I have a pretty bad fear of heights and so that wasn't going to work for me. I still do carry a solar panel on longer trips yes! Great question. But I always tend to carry enough battery power now to get me through whatever I'm on so I don't lose any video. I have to say that my battery bag is far heavier than my food bag and tent combined! That's my sacrifice for RUclips ha ha!

    Good companions make for a good hike Stu. You are a good route finder as well as Isabel and JJ. After the forest route the views got increasingly better. Lots of wildlife on this one. Glad the bear kept its distance. The golden eagle was a piece of work. I was hiking at night in Big Sur many years ago (mistake) and some predator bird swooped down on me and nearly took my scalp off. Your 'ford cam' got a workout on this one, lots of stream/river crossings. Loved the waterfall about half way through the hike. Thanks for sharing.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike 7 дней назад

      Oh my gosh, the bird actually gotcha! That was my fear the whole time. I actually held my trekking poles up over my head after the second swoop by her. Certainly good companions are important in an area like that! As well as experienced ones :-) I certainly had two of those on this one and hope we can do it again sometime next year. I think I'm about finished with all these animal encounters this year though. It just keeps continuing ;-)

    I think the damaged or misding tree bark is possibly chewing by porcupines. If the trees were thrashed, I’d guess elk rubbing against them…but I didn’t see that. So porcupines is my best guess.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike 2 дня назад

      It could be porcupines for sure. But I've seen this all over the backcountry this summer unlike other years. So it's kind of odd.

    Oh I did Northfork southbound a couple years ago and I see it's the same! Those willows... The absolute Houdini of that trail.. I think it made me a stronger person today lol. I also had a hard time finding that Horse camp. I ended up just camping sort of kitty corner to the Warden's cabin there and finding the horse camp the next morning too when heading towards Northfork. It was nice to see this area well documented, I was feeling weirdly nostalgic!

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike 7 дней назад

      So cool! I can't imagine doing that in the opposite direction! That said as we were climbing up North Fork, I could've easily camped there by the cute little little waterfall. The non-panther side is pretty impressive as a meadow and a place to camp potentially. Glad I wasn't the only one struggling out there ha ha! And good for you for going to these crazy places. That's where the experiences are!

    Hi, just watched your video for the second time. I watched last year before my first solo attempt; same direction. Made it to Popple Depot and three nice guys in a truck took pity on me and gave me a lift. I actually had blisters by the end of day 1. I was wearing trail runners and new socks never tested. This sure isn’t a trail runner trail. Anyway, leaving in less than 3 weeks for attempt number two. I was wondering why you didn’t use the resupply bin to lighten your load? Last year I carried 4 days of food and left a resupply in the box but this time I’m going to carry 5 days to err on the safe side. Thanks for the very informative and entertaining video.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike 7 дней назад

      Well good for you for getting out there and learning from things like changing up equipment! I never resupply. I never have and I probably won't unless I have to do something longer than 10 days. ( like the John Muir Trail in California for example ) Why? I don't want the stress. Now on this trail, the resupply box is pretty safe and in a fairly remote area. However, I just don't want to worry about my food being there on such a long trip. What if it's gone? This is what I'm talking about. I go out to relax and not have any stress and I've heard lots of stories about resupply bags and boxes not being there when people have gotten there. That said, those stories are much less than the norm. On the other side of it, I like to carry everything I need for the whole trip. I go at it like a personal challenge. Being completely self-sufficient no matter what. But that's just me. I always tell folks to hike their own hike. Whatever works for you and keeps you out in the woods is a very very good thing! Good luck on your next attempt and I hope you let me know how you did :-)

    Hi Stu, at 15:50 you have your answer to the question of which Durston tent to choose: take the 2 person.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike 15 дней назад

      Yeah that pretty much sums it up. The only issue I think is the footprint. Even the one person has a large footprint and in random areas could be challenging. But it's probably the best tent out there right now to be honest, even though Dan tried to talk me out of getting the two person ha ha!

  • @useruser8506
    @useruser8506 16 дней назад

    I have this (the two person) and I'm a little confused on how to set up this tent properly. I am using a tent floor (the volt floor because MEC isn't telling a spark floor anymore, although it looks like the it's the same size). When do you hook up the floor, the tent and the fly to the pegs? Like, right at the end when all three pieces are assembled properly on the ground? Do you use the one peg on each corner for all three attachments? Or do you use a separate peg for the fly? should I lay out the fly, pound in the pegs and then set up the tent and fly after, and hook them up to the pegs? There are 8 pegs included here. So are the other 4 pegs for pounding those guylines into the ground? Thanks! appreciate any help, as the included instructions are not super detailed.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike 15 дней назад

      Why don't you go to my website and PM me. Happy to help! Just might be easier via email. Briefly however I will say that I use four pegs on the corners. The fly has an interesting way of connecting to the tent poles underneath the main body of the tent. Then I use one peg for each side of the rain fly. And then one peg on each end to allow for airflow.

    So many questions! And I am super excited for this series!! How to manage food on clothing (toddlers are messy and I can't carry 3 changes of clothes per day)? How to manage wildlife risk with said smelly kids? What if they accidentally go in the tent with food clothes? How to wash hands - wipes (is what we usually do at frontcountry outhouse situations but does the sani gel attract wildlife?)? How to pack my backpack for a family of 4 when I am carrying the smallest child? (I currently have a MEC carrier but am looking at the Thule and Osprey Poco Plus). Are hiking poles worth it? Should I get some for the kids too? (Maybe collab with Annika Mang of Born to Be Adventurous? I would love to see a collab with you and her - she did west coast trail with her family). How much extra food to bring for the kids (I assume they eat more than normal?) Ultralight gear? A gear list for kids? (Outdoor Boys sometimes does gear stuff - would be another great collab). What are good starter hikes (eg your one night stand series, or two nights)? We did Elk Island NP backcountry and it was great for trail length and minimal elevation, also garbage disposal on site (yay not packing out diapers!), however mountains and/or lakes we can actually swim in (Elk Island has blue green algae so you do have to pack in all your water). ps. A great small and fairly light tent (from what I've compared) - it's also 4-season and good in the wind - is the Woods Pinnacle 4 (or 2 if you have a small fam). Thanks for all the work creating awesome videos and an awesome channel - we really like your long format videos to help give us a better idea of the trail. You're channel is one the hiking gems of YT.

So it's not like they're out with Dad too much at this moment. Hopefully that will change! And thank you so much for the kind words about the channel. It's certainly a labour of love and it always thrills me to meet people like you here virtually. So again, thank you :-) I do have one question for you. You're talking about elk Island. Where are you located geographically? That will help me answer your question about starter hikes.

It seems like everybody at backpack with has a Durston Tent :-) I have talked to Dan about the one person versus the two person, and he thinks the two person is a bit of overkill for me because his one person is so large. (and the 2 is a TRUE two person) My main concern is that most of the storage area is in the vestibule and there's been a large uptick in porcupine activity on the trails I've been on this year. Yeah you dodged a bit of a bullet there. This particular section would've been awesome as part of a larger trip like we had planned. But it's a standalone, it was a lot of work for less pay off than most people would endure. That said, I love being out in the middle of nowhere. So this was extremely awesome!

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike 21 день назад

      HAHA! I think you dodged a bit of a bullet. As a standalone hike this one isn't quite as impressive as the others in the front ranges, but would've made an excellent add on to our initial plans.

    Hey just wondering if ur having issues with leaks In heavy rain ,I saw one video and the guy says it pools water whatare ur thoughts ? I just purchased this tent and waiting to field test it myself .

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike 23 дня назад

      I haven't had an issue so far, but I haven't had torrential downpours either. That said, given the design, I would be surprised to see it pool water anywhere. I can't comment on anyone else's experience, but typically when something pools water it's due to the way it is set up, often because of uneven terrain for example. I will continue to use this for the rest of the summer and into the fall and do a full review probably in October or November

    Hey Stu. Just checking this out. I had trips all planned out for JNP but now I'm coming up with stuff! The crossing you turned back at? That was the one right at the park boundary? I'm honestly pretty interested in that very nice camp site that was there.

      @HowestheHike 23 дня назад

      Hey Marc! I was supposed to be in Jasper for three weeks as well. I have met lots of people on the trail in Banff and K country who also were supposed to be there... Dolomite Curcuit would be a great hike for you! Dolomite Creek was in flood when we were there simply because the extreme heat was melting the glaciers at a high rate. I know others who have crossed without issues so I think it's just a matter of timing. Would suggest you keep an eye on the Pipestone water levels at Alberta River basins as sort of a guide.

      Just start singing or calling out with your voice. I would never use an airhorn on the trail because it will make you deaf and you will run out of compressed gas before you lose your voice. :-) I do take an airhorn in my tent at night however, in the rare case that something might be poking around. It would probably scare them enough to allow me to get out of my tent and assess the situation.

I had planned to be there for the next three weeks but will certainly get there as soon as they reopen to help support some of those local businesses and people who are obviously struggling. It's a strong community and I know they will recover quickly. Hope you are well, as well!

    I always return from Clearwater Pass by hiking up to the bench on the west side of Siffleur Valley, with its lakes and tarns, and instead of crossing Pipestone Pass as you did, heading over to the Pipestone Summit trail. Excellent walking on fine shale, some unique rock formations, and a route by the tarn that's visible from the Siffleur trail. The bump between the Pipestone Pass and Summit is an easy scramble and gives great views in all directions.

      We are all kind of in the same boat at this point. I had planned to be there for three weeks. The Banff area is still in great shape at the moment as I write this. As is Waterton and Kanaskis. At the present moment, although it changes hourly, there is very very little smoke in the Banff and Canmore areas.
